Car Accident Lawyer | Steps to Avoid Road Rage

It happens to everyone at least one time in their life. Driving down the freeway and you are either going too slow, someone is going too fast, you have people who brake check or tailgate. And someone gets heated and starts displaying signs of aggression. Every auto accident attorney has seen this happen time and time again. As a car accident lawyer in Orange County, we have put together some helpful tips on how to avoid being the target of someone else’s road rage.

Be Consistent

You always want to be consistent in your driving. Don’t rapidly speed up or suddenly brake for no reason and do not take one turn too fast and the next too slow. Consistent driving is one of the best ways to allow other drivers to accurately predict what you are going to do next. Please note, not everyone will do the same for you, so try your best to minimize any instances on your end. However, by driving inconsistently, you risk not only your safety but the safety of those around you. It is best to recognize that everything works best when traffic is flowing naturally. The most important concept behind preventing road rage is to be as predictable as possible.

Don’t Impede Traffic

Impeding traffic can not only cause an accident, but it can cause incidents of road rage. For instance, if you are on the freeway and the posted speed limit is 65mph, the majority of traffic is going at least 70mph. That being said, do not impede other drivers in the far-left lane by going 65mph, if they are going much faster. I have seen this many times and it definitely a cause of road rage. Match their speed or get over to the slower lanes to get out of their way.

If you attempt to match their speed, you risk a traffic ticket. However, this does not mean that you should endanger yourself or others by slowing down an causing an accident. For safety measures, the auto accident attorneys at Silverthorne Attorneys suggest driving at or close to the speed limit. That is, unless conditions do not allow you to do so.

Auto Accident Attorney | Why Tailgating is Bad

We have talked about the dangers of tailgating and how it is seen as road rage. Try to get out of the habit of tailgating if you can. Not only is it unnecessary, it is very dangerous. Some people may have a psychological reaction to being tailgated where they will comply and slow down. Others will do it to just be mean. We suggest that you slow down if you are being tailgated so you can create a cushion in case of an emergency.

If the car in front of you is traveling slowly in the far left (fast) lane, be patient. Do not cause an incident where the other driver will want to retaliate. Do not flash your headlights, as this is seen as an act of aggression. In some states, aggressive driving is monitored by cameras and can be ticketed accordingly.

Check Mirrors and Blind Spots

Not only is it routine to check mirrors and blind spots, it’s considerate and safe. Always check mirrors before passing or merging to make sure no one is sitting in your blind spot. Too many times I have seen people just turn their blinkers on and proceed to change lanes without paying attention to the lane they are entering. If there are people who are driving at excessive speeds, let them pass you first. Once they pass, continue to check mirrors and blind spots before passing other drives.

Semi-trucks have much bigger blind spots. As a rule, if you cannot see their mirrors, it is likely that they cannot see you at all.

Always Use Your Blinker

Failing to use the blinker not only causes incidents of road rage, it also can be dangerous and cause an accident. Always make sure you are signaling before turning, changing lanes, exit the freeway, etc. You always want to make sure to alert people with what you are doing.

  • If you are driving in a fair amount of traffic, turn your signal on sooner than you normally would. This way it will alert other drivers of what your intentions are
  • Signal if you are making a left turn at an intersection
  • If you need to slow down to make a turn or pull over, use your turn signal before turning or pulling over. This gives other drivers advanced noticed that you will be slowing

When you pull into traffic that is already going a certain speed, time your acceleration carefully and quickly. This is done so that you do not force oncoming drivers to slam on their brakes.

Driving a Multi-Lane Road

When you are driving on a multi-lane road, it is important that you do not block the intersection. Our car accident lawyer can tell you that some people block traffic by driving right next to other vehicles going the same speed and end up causing an accident. Blocking traffic in multi-lane roads are becoming a continuous problem; especially in Orange County traffic. Most people have a difficult time understanding how to pass others properly. The less amount of time you spend along a car you are passing, the safer it will be to pass.

Passing on the Right is Illegal

Not only is passing on the right in California dangerous, it is also illegal. If you have to pass a vehicle that is going far below the speed limit in the left lane, do not tailgate them, pull back and drive slower. Never pass on the shoulder of the road or blindly when there is oncoming traffic. This is not only illegal, but can result in being responsible for putting others in danger.
