Accident Attorney | Reducing the Stress of Your Commute

I know just how difficult it can be to sit in traffic during commuting hours. I also know all about the stress and anxiety that goes on during commuting. From having to pay attention to what other drivers are doing, to making sure that you are staying cool and calm when someone cuts you off. Commuting definitely takes a toll. Long commutes can leave people with many different health conditions; from stress to neck and back pain, to fatigue; just to name a few. So, working for an accident attorney and being a commuter, I thought it would be a good idea to share some tips on how to reduce stress during your commute. Below is a list that an accident lawyer at Silverthorne Attorneys had me come up with on how to reduce and manage stress during your long commute days.

Accident Attorney | Commute Stress Relief Ideas

One of the things I have been doing to relieve the stress of my commute is, I listen to podcasts. It has been a great way to help distract and/or occupy myself when I am sitting in traffic for what seems like a lifetime. By changing our environment by creating a pleasant space, it can make our commutes less stressful. You can do as I do and listen to a comedy podcast (I prefer listening to “And That’s Why We Drink” – it’s a comedy/true crime/paranormal podcast that’s hilarious). Or, music is also beneficial in helping to relieve any additional stress during commute hours.

Use Essential Oils

Certain smells actually help to relieve stress. The scents of peppermint and cinnamon have been shown to reduce stress and can possibly be helpful during your commute. You can find these in car air fresheners, or even make some of your own and put them in an essential oil diffuser for your vehicle.

  • peppermint has been shown to reduce anxiety by 20%;
  • peppermint and cinnamon together can reduce frustrations by 25%

You can use them together or separately. You can even buy a car diffuser that goes right into your car lighter.

Unplug for a Bit

Your commute is a good time to unplug and practice mindfulness. Turn off the radio and try to make a commitment to leaving your cell phone alone. In that way, you can enjoy the silence and perhaps even the peace of your commute.

We are all always connected to our gadgets and this time is a good time to go tech-free and can benefit your mental and physical health. Making the time to be distraction free is priceless and can help make your commute less stressful all around.

  • you can also practice mindful breathing as you drive. Breathe slowly through your mouth and hold your breath for a few counts and then let it go;
    • repeat as needed when you find yourself becoming overwhelmed or stressed;
  • if you take the train or subway to work, check to see if there are any quiet cares;
    • some trains have cars that are specifically for relaxing;
      • this means that cell phones, tablets, talking, etc. are not allowed.

Accident Lawyer | Mixing it Up!

Any accident lawyer in our office can tell you that sometimes mixing up your routine can relieve stress. Below, are some ways to mix it up when it comes to relieving the stress of your commute.

Carpool & Public Transportation

If you can carpool with people going the same way, not only will it help relieve stress but it is also good for the environment, as well as your wallet. Not only that, but you can take turns each week and switch off drivers so that the same person isn’t always the one driving. I know how difficult it can be to do all of the driving. Carpooling can also help create new friendships as well as reduce anxiety.

You can find people to carpool with who are colleagues or even by using ride share and the carpool apps that are available. If you cannot find any takers at your work, search on rideshare.org.

As we mentioned before, public transportation can be a great way to relieve stress from your commute. Not having to deal with traffic and other drivers on the road and taking a break will help take the pressure off. Though trains can run a little late and can contribute to your stress, your mind will get a little bit of rest from having to pay close attention to the road.

Take a Different Route

I have to be honest, like most, I am a creature of habit. Which means that I usually take the same route to and from work every day. However, in the research I have done, when you take a different route, not only is it more stimulating to your brain, but the change of scenery may help you to avoid traffic. Sometimes, I use the driving app WAZE to check traffic conditions on the road. Here in Southern California, there are toll roads that you can take in order to avoid some of the traffic on the freeways.

Get Enough Sleep

It can be difficult when you commute every single day. I live 31 miles from work and a good 3.5-4 hours of my day are spent in traffic. Which means that I need to get plenty of sleep the night before. Because I know that if I am tired for my drive, I am more irritable, stressed, and more prone to bouts of road rage. However, when I get enough sleep, I listen to my music, dance in my car, and am overall more alert.
