The Importance of Motorcycle Insurance
Motorcycle insurance is an incredibly important thing to have. It’s very similar to having car insurance. Any accident attorney can tell you that having it is just plain good for peace of mind. Like car insurance, you may not always need it. However, there may come a time when you do need it. And as an accident lawyer we need to tell you that having motorcycle insurance is a big deal. Today we are going to go over the importance of having motorcycle and uninsured motorist insurance. If you are suffering from injuries due to a motorcycle accident, do not hesitate to contact an accident lawyer at Silverthorne Attorneys.
Accident Lawyer | The Importance of Motorcycle Insurance
Not every state requires you to have motorcycle insurance. However, the state of California does. Below are some important reasons to buy more than just the minimum liability insurance.
Standard Car Insurance Does Not Cover Your Motorcycle
Yes, you read that right! Your standard car insurance policy will not cover your motorcycle. You will need to buy separate insurance for your motorcycle. California does require you to purchase liability insurance that is specifically tailored to your motorcycle. So, for instance, if you are pulled over by the police and are asked for proof of insurance, your car insurance card won’t do you any good.
Accident Lawyer | Minimums are the Same
California mandates that you purchase the minimum amount of motorcycle insurance. To be clear, minimums for your motorcycle insurance coverage is the same as your car insurance. For example: 15/30/5.
What this means is: your motorcycle insurance policy must cover at least $15,000 for bodily injury incurred by another person, $30,000 for bodily injury to others involved in the accident, $5,000for property damage caused by the accident. It is, of course, okay to buy insurance that offers more coverage. These are just the baseline minimums.
Liability Insurance Does NOT Cover Costs You Incur
Liability insurance only will cover the monetary damages for which you are liable in an accident. Meaning, they will do nothing to offset any of your medical costs or damage to your motorcycle. However, collision insurance coverage will be able to pay for repairs or replacement costs for any damages to your bike – after you meet your deductible and up to the limits of the policy.
Buying comprehensive coverage will do the same thing for you in a non-collision scenario. For example, if your bike is stolen, vandalized, or damaged in a storm.
The Importance of Uninsured/Underinsured Coverage
As an accident attorney, we always recommend that you purchase uninsured/underinsured (UM/UIM) insurance coverage. This will protect you financially. Especially if you are in an accident with someone who does not either have insurance or does not have an adequate amount of insurance to cover the damages.
In a perfect world, where everyone has insurance, another driver’s liability insurance will cover repairs, medical costs, and other expenses that are directly related to your accident. However, it is unfortunate that many drivers choose to be on the road without the required insurance. UM/UIM insurance policies allow you to be reimbursed for the costs your insurance company picks up, should you get into an accident with someone who is uninsured or underinsured.
You are Required to Carry Proof of Insurance
As an accident lawyer, we know that having to carry around your insurance card can be a bit of a hassle. However, if you are caught without your card, you may end up with a fine between$100 and $200 (even up to $500 if you are a repeat offender). Keeping your insurance card in your wallet, in your gear bag, or even your helmet is a good idea.
Accident Attorney | Coverage Options
Minimum Liability Insurance: This is basic liability insurance that is required by California state law.
Comprehensive Coverage: This covers anything from minimum to those “acts of God.” Basically anything having to do with weather or animal damage. Even in the event of theft.
Collision Insurance: Protects you in the event you collide with another motorcycle and it is their fault.
Personal Injury Protection (PIP): This covers injuries to anyone involved in an accident, regardless of who is at fault.
