Auto Accident Attorney | Preventing Whiplash

Believe it or not, there are actually ways that you can prevent serious injuries due to whiplash in the event of a car accident. and it’s these small preventative steps that can help you in the end.

Did you know that you can suffer from injuries due to whiplash from a rear end accident going only 5mph? Our accident lawyer says it’s true and they have seen it. This is because the amount of force that is put on your neck is five times more than the force of the accident itself. Whiplash is due to your neck and head forcefully jerking from one direction to the other. This can be forwards to backwards or side to side. The below precautions will help prevent serious injuries due to whiplash.

Your Car

I know that one of the biggest safety precautions we all can take when on the roads is making sure that our car is safe. and making sure that it is reliable. I recently purchased a new car myself. However, I did the necessary research prior to purchasing the car; just to make sure the car was reliable and safe. Collect the crash ratings of the vehicle you have or are thinking of purchasing. Cars that hold a better crash rating are far safer in case of an event of whiplash.

Adjust the Headrest

This is something new to me. I have chronic neck problems as it is, so moving the headrest higher was new and a bit of a challenge. However, it should be directly behind your head as you are driving. the proper headrest position will help in the event of an accident so that your head doesn’t jerk back and forth with too much force. Note: the headrest should reach the top of your ears

Wear Your Seatbelt

I cannot tell you how many times I see people on the road or have gotten into people’s cars and they are not wearing their seatbelt. One of the quickest ways to injure yourself or suffer fatal injuries is by not wearing your seatbelt. Even to a trip down the street. You never know what can happen. Make sure you are wearing your seatbelt at all times. Your belt can also help prevent injuries due to whiplash.

Practice Safe Driving

Since being on this road trip the last three weeks, I get to see how people in different cities and states commute to and from work. What their idea of traffic is, etc. in Southern California, we have a tendency to be defensive and aggressive drivers. I don’t think I have seen more than a few instances of road rage since being on the road. and usually during my commutes to and from work, I see a few instances of road rage each way. Yes, drive defensively. but not aggressively.
