Motorcycle Safety Initiative

Partly in response to motorcycle accident statistics compiled by the California Office of Traffic Safety, the officers in the Irvine Police Department will conduct specific motorcycle safety enforcement operations, according to a September 14 press release. This will be part of a statewide effort to reduce motorcycle injuries and deaths. The program is paid for by a grant dispersed by the California Office of Traffic Safety from funds coming through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Motorcycle Accident Trends

In California, crashes involving motorcycles dropped precipitously from 2008 to 2010. A 37% overall decline in the number of accidents was recorded during that period. Unfortunately, by 2012, motorcycle accidents had surged upward 23 percent from those lower 2010 levels.

As a part of the effort in Irvine, additional officers will be assigned to patrol the city’s streets, and they will be on the lookout for the type of violations that have led to motorcycle accidents in the past.

Zero Tolerance Approach

There will be a zero-tolerance approach to the primary factors present in many accidents: speeding, unsafe turns, and impairment. The zero-tolerance policy extends to both motorcyclists and drivers behind the wheel of cars, trucks and SUVs. Motorists need to be particularly alert for motorcycles when changing lanes and turning. The Irvine Police Department reminds riders that training is offered through the California Motorcyclist Safety Program.
